Video, 2014 | A surreal panorama of the Rotterdam river quay. First experiments with an old flatbed scanner turned into a pinhole camera, using a multitude of photographic and video techniques. In 1843 Joseph Puchberger was the first to use the strip technique in a panoramic camera, as Maarten Vanvolsem writes in a book on strip photography. The book also mentions pioneering photographers such as George Silk and Andrew Davidhazy.
Over the course of years Van Bakel further developed this photographic technique, and made a hybrid between an antique large format technical camera and a digital flatbed scanner. Handblown lenses were added later on, in 2020.
