360º video panorama in a series on transatlantic data cables, landing underneath beaches and dunes: Atlantic Crossing 1, at Castricum, the Netherlands*.
Via these cable landing points the physical internet connects continents, so information can be exchanged ‘freely’ (with the proviso of net neutrality).
A meditation on all sorts of strangely distorted, ghostly traces made by people over, under and on the beach.
Van Bakel made these images using sets of three monochrome ‘color separations’, Red, Green and Blue, taken at different timestamps.
He later merges these separate moments in the course of one day into a color video-animation, centring on the notion of time at the cable landing point.
This so-called additive RGB model -applied in most screens today- was described for the first time by James Clerk Maxwell in 1855 – around the time of the earliest transatlantic communication cables.
The camera used is a DIY slit-scanner-camera that yields queer-looking distortions. Van Bakel chose deliberately to abandon post-processing and leave the scan lines and other artifacts in the image.
Watching the work on screen can result in a physical vertigo experience.
The synthesized base for the soundscape is Missa L’homme armé, dating from the 1450s, just before the discovery of The New World.

Tijdens het maken van ‘Road trip to the Dutch mountains’ verdiepte ik me voor het eerst in het fysieke internet, mede geïnspireerd door de roman ‘the Circle’ van Dave Eggers. Hierin blijkt dat de voor ons gevoel etherische cloud diep geworteld is in tubes in de aarde. Ik bezocht een aantal plekken waar diepzeedatakabels aan land komen, en legde de duinen met homebuilt scanner-camera vast. Deze plaatsen zijn bekend uit de media via de Wikileaks onthullingen van Edward Snowden. In wezen zijn dit totaal onschuldige landschappen die beladen zijn omdat ze door de FBI op een lijst van ‘belangrijkste potentiële doelwitten voor terroristen in Nederland’ zijn geplaatst. Presentatie op videoschermen levert een fysieke vertigo ervaring op met het landschap waar -voor ons onzichtbaar- de versleutelde informatie vrijelijk onderdoor raast.
